I did a science fair project in 6th or 7th grade. I guess they are starting them younger now because Andrew got assigned one in 2nd grade. It didn't have to be very complicated, but things have been so busy lately we were worried about having time to plan and execute the project. At first we tried to find a project that was either sports or baseball related, but they dealt with physics and other topics that were too complicated for a 7 year old. The topic that we came up with was "Does the number of folds affect the distance a paper airplane can fly"? Andrew hypothesized that a plane with more folds would fly farther. Danny and Andrew researched various folding ideas and methods and came up with six designs.
Then it was onto folding. As you can see at the bottom of the picture Grant was trying to help out as well. I decided it was time to take a walk around the block at this point.
Here is the finished product.
Then we went over to the church to fly the planes inside and measure their distance. We had to have a place where the wind wouldn't be a factor.
Andrew helping to measure.
Andrew really wanted me to take a picture of himself in the middle of the planes.
Meanwhile, Grant was playing with my phone and
Claire was playing with anything else in sight.
Here is the finished board. He turned it in yesterday and had to present it to his class. We used some of the same pictures that I have posted below along with a chart and then we put the actual planes on the board. Andrew helped me write and cut out the descriptions and glue everything to the board. They will all be on display this week at the open house at his school.
